Jodi is the youngest daughter of Mimi and Robert Habush, a well known trial lawyer, and grew up in a household dedicated to community and to standing up for those in need of care and protection. With a sister with special needs, Jodi witnessed first hand her sister’s challenges and her parents’ heartache, leading her to empathize with other families experiencing difficulties of their own.
After graduating from Nicolet High School, Jodi attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, followed by Harvard Law School. After receiving her law degree in 1992, Jodi began her professional career by serving as a judicial clerk to a federal district court judge, followed by a decade of private practice, ultimately as a partner at the Wisconsin-based law firm of Habush Habush and Rottier.
Jodi married her longtime sweetheart, Dan Sinykin, born and raised in Whitefish Bay, and the couple moved back home to Wisconsin in 1995 after they purchased a textile mill based in Milwaukee.
In the 27 years since, the couple moved their manufacturing facility to Janesville, and despite an ever-changing economic environment, they have managed to keep the factory thriving in Wisconsin. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, they pivoted their manufacturing capacity to produce critically-needed protective equipment for Wisconsin first responders, including the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Advocate Aurora Health, University of Wisconsin Hospitals, countless senior living facilities, and the Wisconsin National Guard.
While her husband operates Monterey Mills, Jodi has dedicated her career to championing Wisconsin’s precious natural resources, spending the better part of the last two decades serving as a policy expert on freshwater stewardship and wildlife conservation.
Jodi joined Midwest Environmental Advocates in 2003, where she developed her expertise in water law, encompassing both groundwater and surface waters. After her early years working on Milwaukee-area pollution cases, Jodi was asked to represent environmental interests on a number of state-level advisory committees, including the Wisconsin Groundwater Advisory Committee and the Wisconsin Legislative Council’s Special Committee on the Great Lakes Compact.
Through her work as a policy expert and her leadership on a state-wide coalition, Jodi contributed significantly to the successful enactment of the Great Lakes Compact in Wisconsin, ensuring the protection of our magnificent Great Lakes for generations to come. In doing so, Jodi demonstrated her ability to work productively with legislators from both parties, to craft statutory language that met the priorities of the varied municipal, governmental, industrial and environmental interests at the table.
Throughout her career, Jodi has consistently worked across the aisle, in collaboration with those representing a variety of interests, to identify common ground and achieve long-term solutions to longstanding concerns. She showcased this ability well in her successful efforts as a policy advisor and lobbyist to secure the passage of a long-awaited law known as Wisconsin’s Puppy Mill Bill—a law that put an end to the deplorable conditions of the state’s previously unregulated dog breeding industry.
In addition, Jodi has dedicated herself to a myriad of wildlife conservation efforts, including litigation to stop the use of dogs for hunting wolves, and her appointment in 2021 to the Wisconsin DNR’s Wolf Management Plan Committee. Jodi also taught graduate students at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences as an adjunct professor and water policy fellow for six years, focusing on Water Law and environmental justice.
These days Jodi continues to serve as an environmental expert and advocate, and can be seen testifying in front of the State Legislature and Department of Natural Resources board.
Jodi raised her four kids—three sons and a daughter—with her husband right here in Senate District 8, amidst a close community of friends, neighbors, teachers, and family. Theirs is a close family, with generations of roots here in Wisconsin, specifically in Senate District 8.
Despite her busy professional and family life, Jodi continues to find time to volunteer in her community and, in her personal time, enjoys watching the Packers, Bucks and Brewers with her family, practicing yoga, and going on long walks with her two sweet rescue dogs, Dahlia and Jasmine.
Strengthening Our Democracy
In recent years, we have seen unfounded claims of election fraud, “anonymous objections” on controversial projects, voter suppression, and gerrymandered voting maps all undermine the public’s trust in our democracy. Jodi cares deeply about restoring and protecting this trust. She will advocate for government transparency, fair maps, reducing unreasonable barriers for eligible voters, will support local election officials and call out misinformation for what it is. Jodi will be an advocate for any legislation that makes it easier for Wisconsinites to vote and will fight back against any attempts to reduce access to the ballot box.
Protecting Women’s Health
Jodi knows reproductive rights are human rights and decisions about pregnancy and healthcare should be a decision made by women, not by far-right politicians in Madison. Jodi’s far-right opponent, Duey Stroebel, has consistently voted to restrict reproductive rights, voting as recently as this year for a 15 week abortion ban, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Duey Stroebel is also on record as opposing the right to contraception in Wisconsin. We need a senator who understands Wisconsin women are still one state supreme court seat away from losing the right to choose, forcing women to leave the state to receive the care they need. With women’s reproductive health and freedoms on the line–as they still are in Wisconsin–we need to make sure we elect a commonsense pro-choice majority to the state senate.
Growing Our Economy
As a longtime business owner, Jodi understands the supply chain disruptions and worker shortage problems that are hurting our small businesses and affecting families statewide. Having fought for decades to keep their factory here in Wisconsin, including through the hard times of recessions and the pandemic, she’ll put Wisconsin businesses and workers first, not overseas ones. While others talk about creating good Wisconsin jobs, Jodi has done it. She knows what it takes to grow our local economy, combat rising costs, and create good-paying jobs.
Safeguarding Our Environment
Jodi has spent her career building coalitions to protect our natural resources, especially our Great Lakes and Wisconsin wildlife. Jodi knows the threat of climate change is real, and that our state’s vulnerable ecosystems, forest systems and wildlife depend upon leaders who value science and conservation practices. Her opponent, Duey Stroebel, in contrast, has prioritized backing private interests and big business over our environment, even at the expense of one of our state’s most spectacular places, the Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs located along the shores of Lake Michigan in the City of Port Washington. We need to elect someone who understands the importance of environmental protections and conservation to our quality of life and that of future generations. This is why we need to elect Jodi, who is a true environmental champion.

Senate District 8 is a suburban district North of Milwaukee and runs along Lake Michigan. The district spans from the wealthy southern portion of the district that is close to Milwaukee and becomes more blue collar as you travel north. This district is squarely in the counties in which all statewide Democrats must perform well to carry Wisconsin, including US Senator Tammy Baldwin and President Joe Biden. The district was newly drawn and the incumbent Republican here used to represent a safe Republican seat and his voting record reflects his former district.
2022 Governor Results:
Democrat: 51.04%
Republican: 48.6%
2022 US Senate Results:
Democrat: 48.57%
Republican: 51.3%
2020 Presidential Results:
Biden: 50.3%
Trump: 49.4%
Jodi’s far-right opponent, current State Senator Duey Stroebel, has consistently voted to restrict reproductive rights, voting as recently as this year for a 15 week abortion ban, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Duey Stroebel is also on record as opposing the right to contraception in Wisconsin. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Duey opposed Governor Evers’ face coverings order in public indoor places, calling for a legislative session to remove this public health order. Duey has also introduced legislation to restrict voting rights in Wisconsin, including restricting absentee voting, ballot collection, and stricter requirements for voters who are “indefinitely confined” due to age or disability.
Democrats need one seat to break the Republican supermajority in the Wisconsin Senate. We must elect Jodi in this key district in 2024 and continue our progress to make a play for the majority next cycle and defend democracy and protect abortion in this important battleground state.
