$500,000. Half a million dollars. Five with five zeros!!
That’s how much you all have raised for our 30 candidates in 9 states already this year. (And actually, the total is over $550,000 as of this writing.) This early money is truly incredible and hugely impactful—even Politico took notice! Huge congratulations on all of your hard work that has helped to get us here.
Lots of action items and info in today’s update. Please check it out, then I hope that you get a chance to restore and relax this long weekend. Happy Independence Day, and thank you for doing your part to make this country one we can be proud of.

1. JULY TALKING POINTS MEMO
Check out the third edition of our monthly Talking Points Memo! This TPM includes current candidate and alumni news, state legislature news, and suggested posts for social media.
3. ANTI-RACISM ACTION & TRAINING
The protests may have quieted down for now, but our work is far from over.
ICYMI, we have curated a list of six organizations building Black electoral power that you can donate to here. You can also request a custom ActBlue link to integrate this into your programming. For some inspiration, check out Sister District MA-RI’s jazz event supporting two Florida candidates plus Higher Heights, an organization focused on empowering and electing Black women.
Additionally, HQ is working on developing a racial equity training for volunteer leaders. We anticipate this will launch in late August or September. If you have any feedback, ideas, or requests, please reach out. In the meantime, check out Justice in June, which provides learning plans for 10, 25, or 45 minutes a day.
3. CANDIDATE STATEMENTS ON BLACK LIVES MATTER
We know that many volunteers and team leaders are looking for a resource where they can find the public statements made by our candidates in support of Black lives and/or policing reform. We have created a public facing tracker that contains the public statements our candidates have made so far.
Some candidates are still refining their statements; we will update this tracker with additional statements as they become available. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Field Manager who is working with that candidate. (If you’re not sure of which FM to reach out to, check the Sister District Directory.)
4. FIRST WEEKEND OF ACTION: FRI. 7/24 – SUN. 7/26
We’re kicking off our 2020 Weekends of Action on July 24, which marks 100 days until Election Day! Check out our Weekends of Action Guide with the full schedule, suggested messaging, email templates, and social shares. Consider using these weekends to build excitement around your events for phonebanking, postcarding, textbanking (later in the cycle), and canvassing (if and when safe).
5. SPECIAL EVENTS
We have two exciting events coming up, featuring Mayor Pete, Sister District alum Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy, Ratf**ked author Dave Daley, and more!
- Wed. 7/9 – Win The Era & Sister District fundraiser for Rep. Sydney Batch with Mayor Pete Buttigieg – RSVP via ActBlue
- Wed. 7/15 – Slay The Dragon Panel Discussion and Fundraiser for Sister District Candidates with VA Del. and candidate for Governor Jennifer Carroll Foy, Dave Daley (Ratf**ked and Unrigged), Sam Wang (Princeton Gerrymandering Project), Meaghan Winter (All Politics is Local), and moderated by Sister District Co-founder Lala Wu – RSVP via Mobilize
6. HQ COMMS SURVEY
If you’ve made it this far in the newsletter, then we want you to take our anonymous survey! It’s super quick, and extremely helpful for letting us know how to improve. It asks what you think about this HQL Update, as well as other communications from HQ.
7. METRICS DASHBOARD – NEW SYNC WITH TEAM SPREADSHEETS
Thank you to the 22 teams and affiliates participating in the Metrics Dashboard Program! This program is an easy way for you to track your group’s progress, as well as to see how other teams are doing. To participate, just visit the last tab of the Cumulative Dashboard, find your group’s dashboard, and request to edit it. (if you don’t see your team listed, just send me a note.)
And something new: We can sync your Team Spreadsheet phonebanking totals to your Team Dashboard. While this won’t capture the week-by-week data that the Dashboard is designed for, the benefit is that you only have to enter your phonebanking data in one place: your Team SS! If you’re interested in getting this set up, please reach out to me.
8. PHONEBANK DEBRIEF & RECRUITMENT EMAILS
Phonebank and email leaders can work together to celebrate your volunteers and build attendance for your phonebank programs. Suggestion: send a phonebank success/debrief/recruitment email to your entire list this week. Here’s a great example from Sister District East Bay, and here’s that email as a Mailchimp template — just click to add it to your team’s Mailchimp account, customize, and send!
9. CANDIDATE APPEARANCE REQUESTS
Reminder: We suggest making candidate appearance requests at least 3-5 weeks out from your desired date. It takes time for campaigns to respond to requests, and you ideally want to create and begin sharing your Zoom registration link at least three weeks out to give enough time to effectively recruit for events. If you have questions about this process, reach out to the appropriate Field Manager, Ore Obiwumi or Oscar Tu.
And a quick tip as you’re preparing for your events: If you’re not sure how to pronounce your candidate’s name, check their page on our website to see if they made an introductory video for Sister District.
10. JUNE VOLUNTEER LEADER CALL RECAP
Thanks so much to everyone that joined us on our monthly Volunteer Leader Call on June 18!
We had a good conversation surrounding racial injustice and inequality led by Rita and Lala before jumping into talking about the best way to recruit folks to your events: calling your volunteers! Big thanks for the leaders that gave their testimonials and Leif for the terrific how-to webinar.
11. SDAN UPDATES – UNRIGGED FIRESIDE CHAT & READER’S GUIDE
12. RESOURCE LIBRARY CORNER – CASE STUDIES
For handy links, explainers, and everything else, check out our Resource Library. Each issue, we’re highlighting a different resource.
This week, we’re highlighting our field and fundraising case studies, in which team leaders describe how they put together successful events so that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Navigate to Field & Fundraising, and look for Case Studies under the tactic you’re interested in. A couple highlights are from Sister District CA Peninsula, our highest-performing fundraisers (by a mile!), and Sister District Greater Chicago, one of the first teams to hold a virtual phonebank since the pandemic started.
