HQL Update: Expanding the Map! Plus Mailchimp Audit, Mid-cycle Survey, Candidate Match Opportunity, Updated Zoom Guidance, and SDAN Friendraising Study
It’s hard to believe, but we have less than 100 days until Election Day. Thank you so much to everyone who made this year’s first Weekend of Action a huge success. By my estimate, we made at least 10k calls this past week alone—our biggest phonebanking weeks yet! Our candidates are relying on us, and we’re getting it done.
Let’s keep it up,
P.S. Back issues of the HQL Update are now available in the Resource Library, starting from June! Organizing → HQL Update Archives. Today’s issue will be uploaded by tomorrow morning.

1. EXPANDED MAP: 5 NEW CANDIDATES
With the incredible field and fundraising support that we’ve provided to our existing slate of 30 candidates, we here at HQ decided that we could do more. So we’re hoping to endorse five new candidates in mid-August—you’ll see an email about this to our entire volunteer list tomorrow.
If you’re being sistered with a new candidate, we’ve already been in touch. If you haven’t heard from us, thank you for continuing to support your candidates who need your help! We are grateful for everyone’s dedication, and excited that this may be our biggest endorsement year ever.
2. MID-CYCLE SURVEY
Please take our anonymous Mid-Cycle Survey! It asks about your Organizing and Field staff, HQ in general, and what we can do to better support you. Please complete the survey by EOD Friday, August 7.
Surveys are extremely helpful for letting us know how to improve. We read every response to the HQ Comms Survey, and have been making improvements to our offerings. Thank you!
3. MAILCHIMP AUDIT
We wanted to give you a heads up you may see some changes in your Mailchimp over the coming weeks. Our Comms Department will be conducting an audit of all teams’ Mailchimp accounts, and making updates. Once the audit is complete, you’ll find:
- Updated Welcome Email with
- Your current candidates
- All references to the correct year (2020)
- No other out of date information
- Fundraising link with a refcode wel-eml-tms
- If applicable, a recurring event RSVP, e.g. your recurring phonebank
- New templates re:
- Phonebank recruitment
- Phonebank debriefs
- Weekends of Action
If you have the time and inclination, we’d absolutely love for you to hop in and make updates to your Welcome Email yourself so you can make sure you’re maximizing those donations! Otherwise, we’ll take care of it in the next few weeks, and will follow up with an email once each audit is complete.
4. PHONEBANK BATTLES!
Want to boost attendance? Challenge another phonebanking team to a duel!
On Sunday, SD Portland phonebankers, led by Jordan Hiller, squared off in a friendly competition against their SD East Bay counterparts, led by Shelly Wong. Neither team had to create a new phonebank—they just hyped their own recurring phonebanks in a new way to drive attendance. Here’s the email Portland sent out to promote.
Total Dials were off the charts at a combined 3,557! Portland’s 35-person attendance was up from their previous high of 18, and their Dial Efficiency was an excellent 1.32 minutes/call/volunteer. East Bay’s attendance of 19 was higher than usual and their Dial Efficiency increased nearly two-fold.
Prizes were awarded for Dial Efficiency, Total Dials, Total Attendees, Individual Best Dial Total, and Funniest Call. And there was some great (friendly!) trash-talking. While “Our tattoos are better than yours” seemed to really sting the East Bay folks, Salil in the East Bay dropped the mic: “Our farms are closer to our tables!”
If you want to arrange a Phonebank Battle, contact your Organizing Department staffer! Maybe for the next Weekend of Action, August 16-18?
5. CANDIDATE MATCHING OPPORTUNITY
An extremely generous donor has offered $10,000 in matching funds for candidates. That means that for every dollar you raise for your candidate, you could raise another dollar through the match. We think this is going to go quickly—please contact your Organizing Manager if you are interested!
6. POLITICAL DIRECTOR CALL – TUE. 8/11
The next Political Director Call is on Tuesday, August 11 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. Political Director Calls are held the second Tuesday of each month. They cover any current races and political strategy, field & fundraising metrics updates, and other political/programmatic topics.
7. VOLUNTEER LEADER CALL – THU. 8/20
Topic: Final 10 Weeks! Knowledge-share Planning Workshop
Please join us to source ideas and develop or hone organizing plans for your team for the final ten weeks of the cycle. We’ll begin with a discussion of a sample plan working back from Election Day and then break out into small groups to workshop. Please invite new and near-leaders! This is a perfect way to get people involved and invested for the home stretch.
The next Volunteer Leader Call is on Thursday, August 20 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. These calls occur on the third Thursday of each month.
8. ZOOM GUIDANCE UPDATE
We’ve updated our Zoom Guidance! We are no longer requiring registration as long as you have a password (passwords are now embedded in your Zoom link, so no need to create a special password) and/or use a waiting room. Changes highlighted in green in the guidance. Ask your Organizing Manager if you have any questions.
9. RESOURCE LIBRARY CORNER – TALKING POINTS MEMOS
For handy links, explainers, and everything else, check out our Resource Library. Each issue, we’re highlighting a different resource. Have a resource you think is indispensable? Let us know and we’ll include it in an upcoming update.
This week, we’re highlighting our updated Talking Points Memo section under Communications. Each month our Communications Department highlights what’s newsworthy at HQ in the political universe. Check out our July Talking Points Memo for images, suggested posts, and messaging. And check back next week for August’s TPM!
