What a week! On the heels of Biden’s historic VP pick, we had a pretty exciting announcement to make of our own: 4 new candidates, with 3 to follow in September. And it’s all because of your hard work and record-breaking results! Our new fundraising goal is $1m to candidates this year, something we never could have imagined 4 years ago. Thank you for making this all possible.

Lots of great stuff in this issue to help you keep your teams energized, motivated, and active all the way through Election Day. Onward!

1. FOUR NEW CANDIDATES!

In case you missed our announcement yesterday, the bottom line is that you’re all absolutely amazing. Help us spread the word about our four new candidates, and stay tuned! We’ll be announcing three more candidates next month.

2. EQUITY STATEMENT

We are pleased to share Sister District’s statement on racial equity, which affirms our commitment to dismantling structural racism in everything we do. This statement is the product of over a year of diversity, equity, and inclusion work that our organization has embarked upon internally, and is just one part of our journey to being true allies and accomplices in the movement for social justice and racial equity. We commit to holding ourselves accountable to this statement, and will follow up with next steps soon, including a training for volunteers

3. ICYMI: MID-CYCLE SURVEY

Please take our Mid-Cycle Survey! It asks about your Organizing and Field staff, HQ in general, and what we can do to better support you. New deadline of EOD Wednesday, August 19. It is anonymous! We really want to know what you think.

4. POLITICAL DIRECTOR DISPATCH – COMING SOON!

Speaking of, surveys really do matter! In last month’s HQ Comms Survey, you told us that you wanted more updates and information about your campaigns. So, Gaby is launching a new monthly newsletter, the Political Director Dispatch, starting on Monday!

I’ve seen a preview, and I know you’re going to love it—it’s chock full of stats on our support for candidates, field activities, and polling insights. Look for the newsletter on Mondays after each Political Director Monthly Call, which are on second Tuesdays (RSVP here).

5. RECRUIT VIRTUAL FRIENDRAISER HOSTS

Organizing tip of the week! To scale fundraising, reach into new networks, and provide leadership opportunities, we suggest recruiting virtual friendraiser hosts. See this example from Portland.

The ask is simple: “will you get your own friends together on a Zoom call and ask folks to donate to our candidates?” The work for leaders is minimal: identify prospects, share the idea and this step-by-step guide: Host a Virtual Friendraiser! Work with your Organizing Department staffer to make a plan.

6. SILENT AUCTION RESOURCES

Online silent auctions have been a hit for SDP Teams! We’ve had 4+ teams, with more in the works, raising tremendous amounts of money for our candidates while having a ton of fun, and highlighting local businesses and artists.

Gigantic thank you to all the leaders that put in the heavy lift to make these events happen. Special thanks to Tom Surrette of SD South Bay for building an online website platform for teams all across the country to use!

If you are interested in hosting a virtual auction, here is a folder of resources from how-to documents to example timelines, developed by the inimitable leadership team of SD Sonoma West County. Reach out to your Organizing Department staffer to get started!

7. NEW VOLUNTEERS ADDED

Per my message to the Slack channel and in the Facebook group last week: To continue to grow our volunteer base, we add new volunteers from a variety of sources each month. These sources include HQ-organized events (e.g., Slay the Dragon panel), and donors to team events or via the website.

We just did a fairly large batch last Friday—July was a busy month!—so you may have seen a bump in sign-ups. For those of you receiving new member notifications, you’ll see that we’ve included some basic information about where these folks came from so that you can tailor your outreach accordingly. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Organizing Dep’t staffer!

8. METRICS DASHBOARD UPDATE

ATTN: Teams using Team Spreadsheets (set up by the Organizing Department), I’ve now synced phonebanking totals in your Team Spreadsheets with the Cumulative Metrics Dashboard for teams that have recurring phonebanks. Check out the Team Totals – Dials tab to see how your team stacks up.

9. ICYMI: MAILCHIMP AUDIT

Our Comms Department has completed its audit of all teams’ Mailchimp accounts, and made updates to your automated welcome email, which is sent to every new sign-up. Please check it out to make sure everything looks right—it’s critical to make a good first impression on new volunteers! Reach out to Lyzz, if you have questions.

10. CHALLENGER OR INCUMBENT?

We’ve heard from a number of volunteers that it would be helpful to see, at-a-glance, if a candidate is an Incumbent or challenger on our candidate pages. We’ve added “Fragile Incumbent” or “Challenger” at the top of each page after the district number. Thanks for the feedback!

11. VOLUNTEER LEADER CALL – THU. 8/20

Topic: Final 10 Weeks! Knowledge-share Planning Workshop

Please join us to source ideas and develop or hone organizing plans for your team for the final ten weeks of the cycle. We’ll begin with a discussion of a sample plan working back from Election Day and then break out into small groups to workshop. Please invite new and near-leaders! This is a perfect way to get people involved and invested for the home stretch.

The next Volunteer Leader Call is on Thursday, August 20 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. These calls occur on the third Thursday of each month.

14. PSA: BE KIND

As we head into this final stretch, I know that we’re all under a lot of stress. That’s understandable because this is, oh you know, just the most important election of our lifetimes.

I know all of us—candidates, campaign staff, Sister District staff, all of you leaders, and your volunteers—are working so, so hard towards our common goals. We don’t have to wait until Election Day to acknowledge and celebrate that. So take a breath, and please be kind—to your teammates, our staff, and of course, yourself ❤️
