2020-08-27 HQL Update
HQL Update: Spanish Language Phonebank, BIPOC Volunteer Happy Hour, New Social Media Manager + Social Squad, and More
August has been quite a month. We were inspired by the vision and leadership at the Democratic convention, and disgusted by the new lows at the Republican convention. We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and women’s hard-won right to vote. This week’s news about Jacob Blake is another devastating reminder of how far we still have to go in our fight against structural racism and anti-Blackness. (Please remember to be extra kind to your Black, Indigenous, and people of color friends during these difficult times.)
Thank you for being in this fight with us. We have less than 70 days to go. Thank you for sticking with us, and doing the hard work.
P.S. ICYMI: Back issues of the HQL Update are now available in the Resource Library, starting from June. Organizing → HQL Update Archives. Today’s issue will be uploaded by Monday.

1. WELCOME: NEW SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER ARIANA RODRIGUEZ
Please help us welcome new staff member Ariana Rodriguez who will be joining the Communications Department as the new Social Media & Content Manager!
Ariana Rodriguez is from South Texas, and recently graduated from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with a Master’s in Public Administration. Before joining Sister District, Ariana worked at a national nonprofit to promote women’s advocacy and for a University grant, where she developed content for diversity and inclusion education programs. During her university experience, Ariana founded the Islander Feminists, served as the chapter leader for Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity (URGE), and the PR chair for PERIOD Corpus Christi. In her free time, Ariana is in a feminist film club, enjoys reading, and playing Animal Crossing.
2. SOCIAL SQUAD
Are you responsible for your team’s social media? If so, you should join the Social Squad! Sister District will be ramping up our social media presence over the next few months and we need your help. If you lead social media for your Sister District team or want to get more involved, this group is for you.
Ariana will be managing this new program to share social media content from HQ, and also to amplify our volunteers and teams on social media. As a member of the Social Squad, you’ll receive weekly updates and an ongoing list of social posts you can leverage for your team’s communications.
3. SPANISH LANGUAGE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
We are in the process of launching a Spanish Language Volunteer Program pilot project to reach Spanish speaking voters in several of our target districts this cycle. If you are interested in participating in an upcoming bilingual phone bank, please contact Head of Campaigns Kiera Hall, firstname.lastname@example.org.
4. ADDING ZOOM REGISTRANTS
As we head into this final critical stretch, we want to leave no stone unturned, and that means making sure that every possible volunteer is in on your team and has the opportunity to take action! Help us do this by uploading spreadsheets (CSV format) of your Zoom registrants from past events into this folder. Please use this naming convention: [YY-MM-DD] [Team name] [Fundraiser OR Phonebank].
In the next few weeks, we’ll get any new volunteers added to our database and, if their zip code is within your team boundaries, your team!
5. THE BIG QUIZ THING
Love trivia? One of our Sister District San Francisco super volunteers runs an awesome company, The Big Quiz Thing, that has helped several teams throw fun and successful virtual trivia events as candidate fundraisers. Email Allison, email@example.com, if you’re interested in learning more.
6. THANK YOU! MID-CYCLE SURVEY
Thank you so much to those of you who completed the anonymous Mid-Cycle Survey. We appreciate the kind words, as well as the thoughtful feedback on how we can improve. We are working now to act on your feedback, and you can expect more follow up soon. If you didn’t have a chance to fill it out but would still like to, we’ll keep it open through the weekend because your answers are just that helpful!
7. HAPPY HOUR FOR BIPOC VOLUNTEERS – THU. 9/3
Sister District recognizes that in order to build a truly inclusive organization, it is critically important to create safe spaces for BIPOC people to connect with each other. In furtherance of this goal, Sister District will implement a monthly BIPOC volunteer happy hour starting in September.
The structure of the happy hour will be flexible so that we can foster ideas and ensure that we develop a program that meets the needs of our BIPOC volunteers. Potential discussion topics:
- Sharing experiences as BIPOC activists
- Identifying issues and brainstorming ideas for making Sister District more inclusive
- How racial equity intersects with work on building electoral power in state legislatures
We create these spaces keeping in mind the journey that we are on as an organization towards our vision for racial equity. Please also check out our Statement on Racial Equity if you haven’t seen it already.
8. POLITICAL DIRECTOR CALL – TUE. 9/8
The next Political Director Call is on Tuesday, September 8th at 5pm PT / 7pm CT / 8pm ET. Political Director Calls are held the second Tuesday of each month. They cover any current races and political strategy, field & fundraising metrics updates, and other political/programmatic topics.
9. VOLUNTEER LEADER CALL – THU. 9/17
The next Volunteer Leader Call is on Thursday, September 17 at 5pm PT / 7pm CT / 8pm ET. These calls occur on the third Thursday of each month.
10. SEPTEMBER TALKING POINTS MEMO
Check out our September Talking Points Memo for lots of great content, including a cover story about Democratic momentum in state legislatures from The Nation, Rita’s latest op-ed in The Hill, and this month’s featured candidate, Sydney Batch from North Carolina.
11. AUGUST MONTHLY VOLUNTEER LEADER CALL
Thanks so much to everyone that joined us on our monthly Volunteer Leader Call on August 20!
We had a great conversation focused around planning for the final 10 weeks of the election including: utilizing friendraisers to scale candidate fundraising, including a sample email, finalizing and submitting requests for final special guest events, and writing down our goals for the next 70 days and how we plan to accomplish them!
12. NETROOTS NATION – PANEL RECORDINGS
