2021-4-1 HQL Update

You are here:

HQ Liaisons,

I am so excited to announce that Jarvis Houston, based in Chicago, has joined Sister District as our new Organizing and Political Director as of Monday! Jarvis brings a wealth of organizing and political experience from across the progressive ecosystem, including at the state legislative level. He is passionate about improving our communities by building power in state legislatures, and I’m looking forward to all we’ll be able to do together.

Simultaneously, I’m also thrilled to announce that I have now moved over to Sister District Action Network as our Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. There, I will continue to oversee our robust research program and to spearhead the development of our growing civic engagement and legislator support programs, including State Bridges, Future Winners, and Purple District Network. I’m not going too far, and will continue to sit on the Leadership and Executive Teams at Sister District. I will also continue to advise on political strategy as Political Advisor.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be working as a team as Jarvis transitions into the role. The next HQL Update or two will come from us together, and he’ll join me on the upcoming Political Director call on 4/13 (Register here!). I know that you’ll all be as thrilled as we are to welcome him to the Sister District family! If you have any questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me anytime.

In other exciting news, April is going to be a big month for Virginia! We’ll be holding our inaugural State Bridges event next week on April 7 with New Virginia Majority, and then we will be rolling out our first wave of Virginia House of Delegates endorsements on April 14. Get State Bridges on your team’s Mobilize page

Please see the “Promoting HQ and Other Team Events” section in our How-To: Mobilize guide for steps.

Get Involved:

If you’re not an event Host, there are two ways you can help these organizations:

  • Raise money unrelated to, or in addition to, the Event Series. Request your own unique ActBlue link for any and all organizations, and fundraise like you would for a candidate.
  • “Co-Host” any and all of the events by requesting your unique ActBlue link, and raise money along with promoting the event(s) on your Mobilize page as described above!

  • SDAN is working to confirm organizations for June through August. If you’d like to Host, please fill out this form. If you have questions, please contact Ore at
  • Note: given interest and capacity, up to two teams might be asked to Host an event. And it’s possible your team may be asked if they’d like to Host a second event!

A big thank you to all leaders for jumping into Action Network, sending emails, flagging quirks, asking questions, and attending trainings! Recordings of these trainings can be found in the Action Network Guide and in the Action Network section in the Leaders’ Corner of the Resource Library.

Texting Update

Mass texting for volunteer recruitment through Action Network is not yet ready while we complete due diligence around new changes in texting regulations, go through the process of “verifying” our past textable contacts, and make sure past opt-outs are excluded from future text recruitment projects. If you want to get going on texting for volunteer recruitment:

  • Create and send a test text! Talk to your Organizing Dept staffer about setting up a test text to send to other leaders on your team
  • Attend upcoming trainings! Join Organizing Manager Taylor Hogeland on April 5 or April 11 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. Sign up here!
  • You can use our Hustle account to send mass recruitment texts. Talk to your Organizing Dept staffer!

Thank you to so many teams sending emails out of Action Network! We encourage you to review the recordings of our recent Email trainings and check for updated instructions in our Action Network Guide. If you want to experiment, send an email promoting the State Bridges program. A State Bridges layout can be found in your team’s account that, with the insertion of your team’s ActBlue link, makes an easy send! Please contact your Organizing Staffer if you have any questions.

Fundraising Data

As a reminder, please continue using your Fundraising Portal (Knack) exclusively to view fundraising data. We will eventually move to a new Team Dashboard that will replace the functionality of the Fundraising Portal. Action Network activist records will include historical donation data eventually, which may be useful for email targeting, but this data is not yet complete in your Action Network database.

We will be announcing our wave 1 candidates on April 14th. Hooray! Similar to the process we used in 2020, email announcements customized for your assigned candidates will be loaded into your team’s Action Network account. Your Organizing Department staffer will email you on April 12 to invite you to go in and customize that email. The email is about introducing the candidates and will include a donation link, set to your team’s unique ActBlue link to raise money equally for all of your candidates. The email will be set to send automatically April 14 at 10am PT / 1pm ET. Please go in, have a look, and if any adjustments are needed, please make them before it’s sent!

If you have any questions about this process or any requests, please contact your Organizing Department staffer.

Context: we are running on the current maps in Virginia this year because redistricting has not occurred due to Census data delays. This will include approximately 10 candidates. We may return for a small Wave 2 after the June 8 primary. We will provide more information about our rollout soon!

Please join us for our Volunteer Leader Call on Thursday, April 15th at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. We will be talking about all things Race Rollout and will use this time for planning, work shopping and idea sharing amongst teams!

Register for the Volunteer Leader Calls here and invite new organizers and leaders from your team to join! Add these calls to your Google Calendar or Outlook. These calls will continue to be held on the third Thursday of each month. They are open to all leaders of teams and affiliates and are recorded. Find past recordings and notes in the Resource Library.

Our next Political Director Call will be on Tuesday, April 13th at 5pm PT / 8pm ET.  Please join us for an introduction to our new Organizing and Political Director, Jarvis Houston! Gaby will be leading the call this month, with future calls to be led by Jarvis.

Register for the Political Director calls here. Add these calls to your Google Calendar or Outlook. These calls will continue to be held on the second Tuesday of each month. They are open to all leaders of teams and affiliates but are NOT recorded.

  1. BIPOC VOLUNTEER WORKING GROUP – April 1st (Happy April Fool’s Day!) TONIGHT

We have relaunched our monthly BIPOC volunteer meeting as a working group to help Sister District achieve a more inclusive and equitable organization. Our next convening will be on Thursday, April 1 at 4pm PT / 7pm ET — please note the new time.

If you identify as BIPOC, we hope that you’ll join us! Please register here, and feel free to share this with fellow leaders and volunteers.

From April 5 through April 17, the Organizing Department will be holding daily office hours via Zoom to answer questions and work through issues related to Action Network and Mobilize. We’ll be able to share screens to show steps and processes for things such as sending emails and creating Mobilize pages.

Join Organizing Manager Leif Warren M-Th 5-6pm ET and Organizing Manager Taylor Hogeland Fridays and Saturdays 3-4pm ET. Sign up here!
