2021-6-24-HQL Update

HQ Liaisons,

States Matter! In these highly uncertain times, state legislatures are more important than ever. The Democratic legislators in Virginia passed laws to expand voting rights, raise the minimum wage, abolish the death penalty and allow local governments to remove Confederate statues. We cannot achieve the structural reforms we need without leadership that has the vision to show up, stand up, and speak out. We are thrilled to endorse 12 candidates in our fight to keep Virginia blue.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. VIRGINIA WAVE 2 CANDIDATES

We were absolutely thrilled to announce our second wave of 2021 endorsements this week. These three new candidates join our existing slate of nine candidates running in Virginia.  You can find our announcement on Facebook and Twitter and can check out each candidate’s page for more social shareables.

  1. SISTER DISTRICT STAFF UPDATES

With the growth of SDAN programming in 2021, Ore Obiwumi has moved into the newly created Program Associate role at SDAN, which will support State Bridges, Purple District Network and Future Winners.  Taylor Hogeland will be taking her knowledge from the Organizing Department to the Political Department as the new Field Manager.  The Organizing Department will soon be reaching out to teams who previously had Taylor as their Organizing Manager.  We have two exciting additions to our staff, who we wanted to share a little bit about:

Madison Thomas, Organizing Manager, Organizing Department.  Madison brings a wide variety of experience to Sister District, most recently from Sara Gideon’s Senate campaign and the Democratic Party of Georgia, working directly with volunteers to generate impressive voter contact results. She is based in Washington D.C.

Mara Helmke, Operations Associate, Operations Department.  Two years ago, Mara started the Sister District Wisconsin chapter.  She brings that experience combined with background in operations from her work in business and her non-profit leadership roles.  She is based in Madison, Wisconsin.

  1. ICYMI: RE-ENGAGE 2020 DONORS!

Looking to find matching donors for events? Want to connect with past donors and ask them to contribute again? Want to activate previously-engaged volunteers? Over the spring, several teams ran projects to accomplish those goals. The Sister District NYC Fundraising Committee put together a successful project and were kind enough to document their work! Check it out for ideas! Case Study: SD NYC Donor Reengagement and Matching Recruitment

  1. ICYMI: VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT BY PHONE

Three Puget Sound leaders with two Organizing Fellows made recruitment calls over the past week through a targeted list of 169 volunteers who had donated or attended past events. By the numbers:

  • 22.5% contact rate
  • 32% of contacts saying yes to at least one ask
  • 73% of contacts who didn’t say yes said maybe to at least one ask

Let’s do a project! See: Volunteer Recruitment By Phone & contact your Organizing Dept staffer to get started.

RESOURCES

  1. ACTION NETWORK DISCLAIMERS

Virginia requires specific language to be included on fundraising emails and all other communications that encourage the election of a clearly defined candidate or that use words such as “vote for”, “elect”, or “support”. The templates in your Action Network accounts have been updated to notify you to include the proper disclaimer. You may also find the candidate disclaimers here.

The following Disclaimer is required on any other emails that do not refer to candidates: “paid for by Sister District Project, not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee”. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Operations Manager, Debbie at debbie@sisterdistrict.com.

  1. METRICS DASHBOARD – PHONEBANK SYNC W/TEAM SPREADSHEETS

Thank you to the teams and affiliates participating in the Metrics Dashboard Program!  This program is an easy way for you to track your group’s progress, as well as to see how other teams are doing.  To participate, just visit the last tab of the Cumulative Dashboard, find your group’s dashboard, and request to edit it. (if you don’t see your team listed, just send Mara an email at mara@sisterdistrict.com.)

As another incentive, we can sync your Team’s phonebanking spreadsheet totals to your Team’s Dashboard.  While it won’t capture the weekly data that the Dashboard is designed for, you now only have to capture your phonebank data in one place.  Please reach out to Mara if you are interested in setting this up.
