The Democratic majority in Virginia passed laws to expand voting rights, raise the minimum wage, abolish the death penalty and allow local governments to remove Confederate statues. We cannot achieve the structural reforms we need without leadership that shows up, stands up, and speaks out.
We know we can transform our government from the ground up to expand healthcare, erase the school to prison pipeline, end mass incarceration, and change the system one election at a time.
But only if we organize!
“The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.” -Jim Rohn

- PHONEBANKING: WE’RE DOING GREAT!
We have 17 weekly phonebanks up and running, which is about double our total at this point last year. We’ve all gotten better at running virtual phonebanks over time such that we’re second-to-none in this department. And what about total dials, which is how we measure the support we’re providing campaigns? We’re all experiencing lower attendance than at this point last year, but 2021 is a very different animal and comparing raw numbers won’t tell the story. What we phonebank leaders want to consider is the percentage of campaigns’ dials we’re making. Drumroll please . . . in 2020 we made 22.6% of our campaigns’ total dials. For 2021, as of June 15, we’ve made 59.4% of our campaigns’ total dials. You read that right. You’re doing great. Keep it up. Use that metric to appreciate and encourage your phonebankers.
P.S. Is anyone ready for a Phonebank Battle? Talk to your Organizing Dept staffer. See: Oregon v East Bay 2020 Phonebank Battle case study.
- CANDIDATE FUNDRAISING IS STRONG!
The creativity and hustle from the Sister District community around candidate fundraising is remarkable! We have raised 13.5% of campaigns’ total fundraising to date in 2021. By the end of 2020, we had raised 8%. Let’s keep the pedal to the metal, stay in the double digits, and continue to be a solid source of support to help our candidates build and run winning campaigns.

It is not too late to join — just visit the last tab of the Cumulative Dashboard, find your group’s dashboard, and request to edit it. (if you don’t see your team listed, just send Mara an email at email@example.com.)
For teams raising funds for State Bridges, you can track your fundraising in the Metrics Dashboard, just like you do for candidates. Each section in the dashboard can be used for a candidate or organization.
- ICYMI: ACTION NETWORK DISCLAIMERS
Virginia requires specific language to be included on fundraising emails and all other communications that encourage the election of a clearly defined candidate or that use words such as “vote for”, “elect”, or “support.” The templates in your Action Network accounts have been updated to notify you to include the proper disclaimer. You may also find the candidate disclaimershere.
The following Disclaimer is required on any other emails that do not refer to candidates: “Paid for by Sister District Project, not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee”. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Operations Manager, Debbie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
