Sister District made a splash this year at Netroots Nation, one of the largest annual gatherings of progressive professionals in the country. This year’s conference was in Philadelphia, from July 11-13. Co-Founders Gaby Goldstein and Lala Wu each appeared on panels with other prominent industry professionals; and Co-Founder Lyzz Schwegler and Head of Technology Cat Robinson lead a training on digital security.

Cat and Lyzz kicked off Day One of Netroots with their training “Security 101: Securing Your Organization Against Hackers, Trolls and Bad Actors.” The two covered underlying reasons progressives are vulnerable to attack, how to identify if your organization has been hacked, and best practices for rapid response and prevention. The training was aimed at industry professionals of all skill levels, and feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Co-Founder Lala Wu on the DailyKos Elections Q&A Panel

On Day Two of the conference, Lala appeared on the prestigious “DailyKos Elections Q&A” panel, with industry colleagues Jeff Singer, Stephen Wolf, and Arjun Jaikumar of DailyKos; and Claire Low of NDRC. The panel is a perennial favorite at Netroots, as panelists take questions from the audience and followers online on everything elections-related including forecasts, polling data, the implications of redistricting, and trends in grassroots organizing. The livestream of the panel has over 3,000 views and is available as a recording on Facebook.

Finally, on Day Three Gaby joined a panel covering one of our favorite topics at Sister District: “Building the Bench: Racial Equity and Diversity at the State and Local Level.” Gaby was joined by Krithika Harish of Civitas, Philadelphia City Councilmember Helen Gym, and Johanna Silva Waki of EMILY’s List. The panelists discussed the importance of recruiting, training, and supporting a diverse pipeline of candidates in downballot races, who will be more representative of their communities and be well-positioned to eventually run for higher office. The livestream of this panel is also available to watch on Facebook. And, read Gaby’s thoughts and take-aways from the panel here.

Sister District attendees also found time to give media interviews, meet with friends and colleagues, and be inspired by a few of the Netroots keynote speakers, including Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representatives Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Deb Haaland, and Rashida Tlaib.
