Dallas Harris

nevada State Senate | District 11 | Incumbent
2024: Running

Senator Dallas Harris has held this seat in the State Senate since December 2018. Dallas is a Las Vegas native; born in Sin City on July 22, 1985. Growing up in Las Vegas, Dallas enjoyed participating in various youth sports, but her favorites were tennis, basketball, and Taekwondo. She attended several schools all around Clark County including Parsons Elementary; Swainston Middle School, Lied Middle School, Las Vegas Academy (majoring in Theatre), and Green Valley High School. Her own experience in the Clark County School District drives her passion for improving education in Nevada.

After graduating high school in Las Vegas, Dallas began her post-secondary career at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In 2008 she obtained a B.A. in Psychology and in 2009 she graduated with a B.A. in Computer Science. From there, Dallas moved to Southern California to study at Claremont Graduate University where she earned a master’s degree in Public Policy. While there she studied economics, cost-benefit analysis, policy analysis, and statistics. This education informs her policymaking today.

Dallas then headed to the nation’s capital for law school. During her time in Washington, D. C., Dallas interned at Public Citizen, the Federal Trade Commission, Facebook, and at D.C. City Council. She graduated from the George Washington University Law School in 2005 with a new understanding of law and policy.

Since graduating from law school, Dallas has dedicated her career to public service. From 2015 to 2017, she worked as a Policy Extern at Public Knowledge, a D.C. based non-profit that advocates for expanded broadband access and consumer protections. She then returned home to Nevada and took a job as an Administrative Attorney at the Public Utilities Commission until mid-2019. There she gained experience in state government and utility regulation. As of August 2019, Dallas is a Consumer Rights Attorney in the Adult Guardianship Project at the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.

On the Issues

Maternal Health & Child Care Costs
Senator Harris is firm in her belief that equitable access to quality maternal care is a human right, not just a healthcare imperative. Every mother deserves dignity, respect and excellent healthcare. Senator Harris will continue to advocate for policies that prioritize maternal health for every mother.

In addition to maternal health care, Senator Harris wants to push legislation that will make child care more affordable for working families in Nevada.

Protecting Reproductive Freedoms
Senator Harris is known to take on tough fights, including standing up to MAGA extremists threatening access to abortion. In 2023, she voted to amend the state’s constitution to include protections to reproductive health, including birth control, prenatal care, postpartum care & miscarriage management. Now, as Republicans begin to target IVF & infertility care, Senator Harris will work diligently to ensure that family planning remains a conversation between families & medical professionals, not right-wing extremists.

Gun Safety
During her two first terms, Senator Harris has championed, carried and passed several gun safety bills including a decade-long firearm ban for those convicted of hate crimes.

But her work isn’t done yet. Senator Harris is pushing to fix “ghost guns” laws, preventing untraceable guns from making their way into the hands of those that are not able to legally obtain a firearm & expanding locations where someone cannot carry a firearm to include polling locations & ballot tabulation centers.

Why This Race Is Important

Dallas is running for reelection to the Nevada Senate in District 11, a newly drawn seat that the GOP Governor Joe Lombardo has already named his top-target in 2024. Dallas was appointed to the Senate when Attorney General Aaron Ford was elected and subsequently was reelected. Dallas will need to introduce herself to new portions of this district and push back against the far-right attacks against her to win this purple district in November.

Candidate in the News

  • Dallas Haris, community advocate & dedication to public service
  • Nevada lawmakers form LGBTQ+ Caucus to ‘move state forward’
    • “Democratic state Sen. Dallas Harris, who was elected Monday to serve as the first chair for the caucus, said legislative priorities for the group include bills that increase protections for trans inmates within the Nevada Department of Corrections and a gun violence prevention bill to ensure people who’ve committed hate crimes against the LGBTQ community can’t access guns.”
  • LGBTQ issues have strong voice in Nevada Legislature with newly formed caucus
    • “I’m happy to see lots of engagement and lots of interest in ensuring that LGBTQ+ Nevadans across the state feel welcome here and continue to feel welcome here.”
    • About Gender Affirming Care: “This isn’t some arbitrary thing that kids are doing because it’s hip or cool. This is classic health care that needs to be treated as such. And so sometimes you need to let folks know, “Hey, this is care that we want to be covered because it should be covered.” If companies were doing this on their own, there wouldn’t be a need for this legislation, but in my opinion, this is squarely within the type of health care that people need, and we should be delivering and insurance companies should be covering.”
    • “Another bill I’m working on is a hate crimes gun prevention bill, which would remove guns from folks who have been convicted of hate crimes that are gross misdemeanors. We already do it for felonies. We’ve done it for domestic violence. This would now add what I think is a small current loophole in the system to ensure we’re catching folks who have been convicted of hate crimes also.”
