We are thrilled to introduce our second wave of candidates for 2023!

Our next six candidates of 2023 are:

2023 is Sister District’s fourth cycle supporting candidates in Virginia, and this year is especially significant. After working hard to flip the House of Delegates in 2017 and 2019, Democrats lost the majority in the House of Delegates in 2021 by a total vote difference of 733 votes in the three closest districts. Now, we have a chance to flip the House back by picking up just three seats.

We’re backing strong, brilliant candidates — like Russet, Lashrecse, Phil, Susanna, Travis, and Amy — to build a line of defense against Glenn Youngkin, who is working to fill the General Assembly with loyal Republicans so he can advance his dangerous agenda, including a 15-week abortion ban.

About Candidate Russet Perry

Russet Perry has dedicated her life to public service and helping people. Her father was a public school teacher and her mother was a student returning to school after surviving Stage IV breast cancer. The struggles Russet’s family encountered have left her fiercely passionate about issues surrounding the cost of living, putting food on the table, and access to affordable healthcare. Russet attended George Washington University and Georgetown Law. She has spent her career as a prosecutor in Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office and serving as a CIA Officer. Now, Russet is running for the Virginia State Senate to expand her compassionate advocacy to fight for ALL Virginians.

About Candidate Lashrecse Aird

Lashrecse Aird is running in the newly drawn 13th District in the Virginia State Senate.  Lashrecse served three terms in the VA House of Delegates and was the leader in passing Breonna’s Law in Virginia which banned the use of no-knock warrants.  In the Democratic primary, Aird defeated an anti-choice Democrat and will be a staunch advocate to protect reproductive freedom in Virginia.   Aird will use her experience fighting for all Virginians from the House in the VA Senate to advance progressive policies.

About Candidate Phil Hernandez

A beloved Sister District candidate from the 2019 cycle, Phil Hernandez is again running to represent his community in Richmond in the newly-drawn 94th House of Delegates district. A product of the Hampton Roads public school system, Phil earned a scholarship to attend William & Mary – becoming the first in his family to graduate from college. Phil has gone on to work as a Civil Rights attorney, an Obama White House Senior Policy Analyst, and now serves as the Senior Vice President at a nonprofit organization where he is fighting on the frontlines for Virginia families to increase the minimum wage and fully fund K-12 public schools.

About Candidate Susanna Gibson

Susanna Gibson is running to represent the 57th District in the Virginia House of Delegates.  Susanna is a wife, a mother of two young children, a Nurse Practitioner, and a public health expert with years of experience providing home-based primary care to vulnerable patients in her community. With the threat of a Republican trifecta, Susanna is dedicated to being a staunch advocate for reproductive freedoms and preventing Republicans from gutting the public education system as a Delegate.

About Candidate Travis Nembhard

A husband, father, attorney, and former financial regulator and administrative law judge, Travis Nembhard is now running for the 22nd District in the Virginia House of Delegates. As a lifelong public servant and advocate, Travis’ campaign focus is to combat injustices, inequality, government overreach, and misinformation, along with ensuring that our Commonwealth is transparent, accessible, and representative of all Virginians. Now, in this newly drawn district, Democrats hope to win 51 seats in the House of Delegates hinges upon Travis’ success.

Now is the time to get involved

Glenn Youngkin has promised to spend big to secure a Republican trifecta this November — but with our collective support, our brilliant candidates will have an army of small-dollar, grassroots donors needed to win.

Our teams around the country are already hosting virtual and in-person candidate meet & greets, fundraising events, and voter contact activities like phonebanking, postcarding, and canvassing. If you’re interested in getting involved in this important election, sign up to volunteer now!
