Statement On Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential Pick

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Sister District Project, a national grassroots organization working to build progressive power in state legislatures, released the following statement on Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential Pick:

Today marks a step forward for women in American politics as Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris as his running partner for the presidency. The Democratic party has a wealth of qualified women to choose from for this critical position, and the shortlist alone demonstrates that our party has a bright future ahead. We are thrilled that Biden chose Harris, a groundbreaking and prepared leader who will bring valuable perspective to the Biden administration.

The past few months have been filled with unprecedented challenges. From the coronavirus pandemic to racial justice uprisings, our nation is at a moment of reckoning. In this historic time, we need a leader like Harris who is firm in her commitment to justice and unwavering in the fight for equity for all—and she is the type of leader we need alongside Joe Biden to help us to weather the years ahead. But the political power and influence for women doesn’t stop at the vice presidency.

Women have long stepped up to lead during difficult times. Over the past months, we have seen women leaders at all levels of government provide steady leadership to constituents who are uncertain about the future, which is why we’re happy to say that 29 of our 35 endorsed candidates are women. We don’t just need women in the position of vice president, we need them leading in state legislative chambers across the nation. Electing women to office strengthens our democracy, and we look forward to the day where there are no more glass ceilings to break.
