Sister District Hits Record-Breaking $1 Million Fundraising Milestone For 2020 Election Cycle In Just Six Months

SAN FRANCISCO, CA– Today, the Sister District Project announced that they raised over $1 million in small-dollar donations to support their 37 endorsed candidates for the 2020 election cycle. Since 2017, the organization has used small-dollar fundraisers to boost Democratic momentum in state legislative races, along with providing volunteer field support. They have now outraised their total efforts in 2018 by $250,000 – with two months still left to collect contributions.

“We are overjoyed to hit a major fundraising milestone for our candidates this year, and it comes at a perfect time — Republicans continue to reach new lows in the way they’re poorly leading in states,” says executive director Rita Bosworth.

“With a little over two months until Election Day, it’s time for Democrats to kick investing in down-ballot races into high gear and widely recognize that state legislative races are just as important as the presidential ticket. This year revealed how broken our country has become, and we can’t change our path simply by ousting Trump from the Oval Office. It’s time for a complete shift on all levels of government.”

As the only national grassroots group focused exclusively on state legislative races, Sister District has become a powerhouse since their inception in 2016. Last year, they played a pivotal role in delivering a Democratic trifecta to Virginia for the first time in a quarter of a decade, with eight of their candidates winning their races as well as all of their notable alumni candidates getting re-elected to their positions. This year, they’ve endorsed 38 candidates for office across nine battleground states, and have focused on building diverse representation in states through supporting multiple BIPOC candidates.

The Sister District Project works to turn states blue by winning state legislative elections. They “sister” volunteers from deep blue districts with carefully targeted races in swing districts, where flipping control of the state legislature will help end partisan gerrymandering.

Since launching in the wake of the 2016 elections, the Sister District Project has grown to over 45,000 volunteers across the country. Our volunteers have raised over $3 million in small-dollar donations directly to candidates and reached out to over 2.2  million voters via phones, doors, postcards, and texts.
